 TLF Activities

The names Abadina and Ajibode may sound either familiar or unfamiliar to many of us here. These are schools that we have had the privilege to donate school items to and speak. These schools have produced great people in the society.  But like many other schools, some of these people have failed to return to right the wrong, support in cash and kind, volunteer to teach, counsel and offer mentorship or just generally encourage the staff and students. Our TLF activities have been subsumed in the SBMC which now exists in government owned schools. We attended the trainings and were given stipends. Our mummy Akpofure and brother Ifeanyi and I were present at different days. We learnt a lot and we commit to making the schools around us better functional and catered for.    The projects on ground by the SBMC and PTA of these government schools are big and need financial support. Take for instance the Estate Primary School were we all use for voting in our commu
Whatsapp Message The Governor of North Carolina once complimented Thomas Edison on his creative genius. "I am not a great inventor," countered Edison. "But you have over 1,000 patents to your credit," the Governor stated. "Yes, but about the only invention I can claim is absolutely original, is the phonograph," Edison replied. "I'm afraid I don't understand," the Governor remarked. "Well," explained Edison, "I'm an awfully good sponge. I absorb ideas wherever I can and put them to practical use. Then I improve them until they become of some value. My ideas are mostly the ideas of other people who didn't develop them themselves." Edison was a lifelong learner. He stayed open, hungry for knowledge, and teachable. And to succeed, you must too. To know whether you're teachable, ask yourself:  (1) Am I open to other people's thoughts and ideas?  (2) Do I listen more than I talk?  (3) Am I willing to cha

English Language Day is marked every 23rd of April. We know English is a language widely spoken and used in commerce. Remember in the month of May, our theme in TLF is Communication. Inasmuch as we all have our languages and we appreciate and celebrate them, we must acknowledge that in a country such as Nigeria where there are diverse languages, English has helped us to interact with each other, and learn, and read and better understand a number of things derived from the western world. At our centre, we will be having a viewing of “Education - development or title” presented by Dr. Tunde Adegbola organised by TEDxPortHarcourt.  Everyone is invited to participate, invite others and donate towards the organisation. On the other hand, 21st of February yearly is celebrated as International Mother Language Day. Here we are happy to share the opinion of this celebrated Prof on the issue of learning in our mother tongues. #September #Learning #JoinUs

Pray for Our Cause

Donation for the Month- We will love for you to join us as we provide bells, wristwatches and a clock to aid punctuality, time management and orderliness in schools. My nephew is now the punctuality prefect in one of the most celebrated government schools and I wish him well as a senior prefect! We also desire to continue in our need to raise money to get more small chairs for children in the TLF Centre. Remember our sister and her husband donated some money that enabled us buy 7 chairs and we desire as many as 20.  The chairs differ in quality and price. The prices range from N700 to N2500! Besides this financial donation as we earlier stated, we have also decided to provide certain things for the school to aid their teaching in this new session. These things can be donated in kind such as things teaching and learning like learning charts, exercise books, school bags, shoes, uniforms, biros, pencils, white boards and makers, school begs, wristwatches and Nigerian fl

Culled from Our Daily Bread “Hands-On Learning” By  Amy Peterson Imitate me, as I imitate Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1 Read: Titus 2:1–8 My six-year-old son, Owen, was thrilled to receive a new board game. But after a half hour reading the rules, he was frustrated. He couldn’t quite figure out how it worked. It wasn’t until later, when a friend came over who already knew how to play, that Owen finally got to enjoy his present. Watching them play, I was reminded of how much easier it is to learn something new if you have an experienced teacher. When we’re learning, reading the instructions helps, but having a friend who can demonstrate makes a huge difference. The apostle Paul understood this too. Writing to Titus about how he could help his church grow in faith, Paul emphasized the value of experienced believers who could model Christian faith. Of course teaching “sound doctrine” was important, but it didn’t just need to be talked about—it needed to be lived out. Paul wrote t

Kick against Vices

What are our schools turning into is a common question. But in reality these vices have always been there. They are not new. We can all bear witness to one sort of vice or the other that plagued our schools while we were growing up. But why do we help push the vicious cycle? We can speak up. We can stand up. We can kick against all these immoral and unprofessional acts and vices and encourage good virtues, dignity and common sense. See the last picture and agree with me that that act is commendable but can grow to mean something sinister if not properly handled and tailored by the right people. #September #Learning #JoinUs

ODB Message

“Fifteen-Minute Challenge” By  David C. McCasland Turn my heart toward your statutes. Psalm 119:36 Dr. Charles W. Eliot, longtime president of Harvard University, believed that ordinary people who read consistently from the world’s great literature for even a few minutes a day could gain a valuable education. In 1910, he compiled selections from books of history, science, philosophy, and fine art into fifty volumes called The Harvard Classics. Each set of books included Dr. Eliot’s Reading Guide titled “Fifteen Minutes A Day” containing recommended selections of eight to ten pages for each day of the year. What if we spent fifteen minutes a day reading God’s Word? We could say with the psalmist, “Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word” (Ps. 119:36–37). Fifteen minutes a day adds up to ninety-one hours a year. But for whatever amount of time we decide to read the Bible eac
Issue Picture I often attend Inaugural lectures wherever I find myself in academic environments in whatever field it centres on. In one of the lecture series I attended last month, I walked home with a man who asked a very pungent question. He said with all these professors and lectures what good has it brought to the society? How has Nigeria as a whole progressed? It is a food for thought. If only our numerous projects, theses and researches can leave the shelves and go to town. #September #Learning #JoinUs

If we try this many people will rush to the TLF Centre in greater number that they are currently doing. But we want to change this narrative and encourage reading. We have many books which we also have their video depictions. We also have audio books and ebooks. Let’s encourage reading of physical books, they help us stay focused. Reading from the internet provides a wide range of distractions from pop up adverts to suggested links!!! #September #Learning #JoinUs
Perilous times Read yesterday how a man paid his daughter's kidnappers with bitcoins for her to be released safe and sound☹  I pray God to help us. We're not insensitive to the happenings around us as a state and nation and indeed the entire world. We are, and we are on our knees in prayer continuously for our country and our people. No one can live in a bubble in Nigeria, no matter how rich, safe or immune to news or happenings around, No, it's to our faces, maybe not to us or our close relatives, but it's to us. In my humble opinion our vision for people to be SSL Sensible Sensitive Loving Will go a long way in achieving our collective aim. Most people who had deliberately wronged and destroyed the various systems in one way or the order didn't think it wise to protect their children's children from the mess. Most people who were not sensitive to the abnormalities and like the 2 men who walked pass the man the good Samaritan eventually helped

Solve the Puzzle

Edible Picture

My friends came in for a wedding from Ibadan sometime last month. The reception was at Basement in UniBen and I went there to meet them and help in any way I could. While showing them around I told one that Basement was actually used as the cafeteria for students in UniBen originally, just like in Mellanby Hall in UniIbadan and others in different parts of Nigeria. Now such arrangements do no longer exist. What is presently pushed by political leaders in Nigeria is the school feeding programme for some primary schools in some pilot states. There’s the issue of the aim of the school feeding programme and of cause the quality and quantity of the food given. Let’s consider some countries and see the way they also feed students in schools. #September #Learning #JoinUs
