ALCOHOLISM

Isaiah 28:7 ‘But they also have erred through wine, And through intoxicating drink are out of the way...’ I began drinking strong drink (alcohol) and smoking tobacco when I was nine years old. My brother and I played music at weddings. At these events there is a lot of alcohol. I drank and smoked - it was the normal thing to do there. Then I had to go into the army to serve my country for a year. I drank even more and became an alcoholic - I could no longer live without strong drink. I could not even sleep at night unless I had drunk enough alcohol. It ruled my life. I was like this for 20 years and - yes - I was the biggest alcoholic in my town. Everyone knew me because of my drinking. During this time I married, but alcohol spoiled my marriage. My wife and I were going to get divorced.  Then one day, a Christian spoke to me about Jesus Christ and how he loves us so much. Even if we are very bad, he wants to forgive us all our wrong doing. I began to cry - me, a strong man! But God was doing something good in my life. I asked Him to change me right around and that is what he did. From that moment I stopped drinking alcohol and smoking. For the first time in my life I was free. All the people who knew me were very surprised. They did not believe it was possible to stop being an alcoholic so quickly and without any trouble. They said, "He will drink again." That was seventeen years ago! I have not drunk alcohol or smoked a cigarette since that time. God saved me from it all. He has shown me that his power is greater than the power of alcohol. He also saved my marriage. Now my wife and I have one daughter and a grandchild. My brother and I still work by playing music at weddings and other special events, but now I can do it without needing any strong drink. I play in Christian meetings too. God has helped me to find real happiness and peace in my life. Do you have a problem or wrong habit that is ruling your life? Do you think there is no way out for you? God has the answer. He can free you from all wrong habits and give you a new start just as he did for many. He wants to give you freedom and forgiveness. Jesus paid the price when he died, even for our wrong habits. Will you ask him today? Courtesy: SOON. Ephesians 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,

In this month of August, we wish that all would take the issue of alcoholism seriously, as it has led to the death of many and their victims- drunk driving, wife battery, etc.

Story Time

Lisungu Chieza from Zimbabwe was 26 when she was told in 1996 that she was HIV+. "This started my long journey of coping with being HIV+. My husband died in my arms at home eight months later." Not only did Lisungu have to cope with her own illness and losing her husband, but her husband's family also wrongly blamed her for his death. They came to her house, took away his things, and said, "If those children of yours get sick, don't even call us. We won't have anything to do with them or you." They would not even let her go to her husband's burial. "I gave up a college course I had planned to do. All I thought about was death. I neglected my children and myself." But her mother supported her. Lisungu began to find hope again and joined an HIV support group. Then she started to help others who were also HIV+, and took a college course about HIV-AIDS. She spoke at HIV meetings with the young people in her church. She believes that it is ver...

Although this celebration is marked in the month of May, we have harmonised all relevant sub-themes dealing with family and youth under this month of August.  15th of May is International Day of Families.  We commend all those individuals, groups, NGOs, Charities, Foundations and others who engage in one form of activity or the other to promote wholesome family life and the true meaning of family.  God bless your labour and work of love. May we not do anything in vain. Remember - Matthew 12:49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, "Here are My mother and My brothers!
