Education of Household and staff:
Family members, relations on visits and domestics should be educated on security procedures, including:
i. Answering the door first find out who is at the door before opening. Use of peep hole, and opening into a secure chain prevents forceful entry by an intruder
ii. Telephone. Do not give out information (e.g. address, names, whether you are at home or not) even when requested by caller.
iii. Emergency procedures. Know how to respond in event of fire, armed robbery attack, etc. Emergency numbers to be placed where easily seen, knowledge of basic First Aid (First Aid kit should be available in the home)
iv. Lighting. Illuminate all round your building or flat, especially the areas of the entrances/exits. Always leave light on in a part of the house when away at night in order to make it difficult for an observer to know when you are in or not.
While most effort is concentrated on warding off external threats, a threat within is far more dangerous due to the unlimited access and information at their disposal. Eliminate this loophole:
i. Carry out security background check on your (domestic) staff before hiring, and periodic checks while in your employment
ii. Find out who they associate with and places they frequent
iii. If in doubt about character and associates, fire.
iv. Make necessary changes with respect to things such dismissed staff had access to.
