Back then, a Christian could marry a Muslim. It was no big deal in the past. My grandfather was a Christian till his dying day and his wife, my grandmother was a Muslim till she passed on. Al'jannah and Heaven were the same things.
There was no world war or civil unrest about their union. Ileya was Ileya for everyone. Christmas was awesome for all faiths. Odun Orissa (Put the name there) was a welcome excuse to demand for exotic meat in the pot of soup of an uncle.
Life was good. The environment was sane. Standard of living was good. Everyone was proud and happy to be alive.
My grandmother was buried according to Islamic rites and her husband according to Christian doctrine. Let's not even talk about Life expectancy and general average age ratios...
The rest is left with God and the ancestors
These days:
The Christians are so 'spiri' that they cannot be evenly yoked to 'unbelievers' and the Alfas in mosques are so prominent that they can blacklist your entire family for marrying the infidel--the Kaffir, someone outside the faith. The Pastors...
The families are prepared to abandon you for disobeying them. As if love is one remote control test station that obeys those formulaic rules. Love is a radical reagent. It reacts against the norm of expected results.
Ileya has become boring. Christmas has become bland. Odun Orisha has become no go area. The communal nature of our people within the cosmopolitan space has become individualised. You only know you have extended family when it is announced that you are dying of a terminal disease or that they are preparing for your funeral.
Life is great for Yahoo boys. The rest of us are forming papaz. At least the suicide rates tell you that everyone isn't happy to be in a State of constant and convoluted shocks. How about life expectancy and death rate ratios...
The ancestors have gone to sleep and God is amused by our collective stupidity.
