A Word:

A careless word may kindle strife.

A cruel word may wreck a life,

A bitter word may hate instill;

A brutal word may smite and kill,

A gracious word may smooth the way;

A joyous word may light the day.

A timely word may lessen stress;

A loving word may heal and bless.

Turn the tables- the luggage-laden husband stared miserably down the platform at the departing train. 'If you hadn't taken so long getting ready.' He sadly admonished his wife, 'we would have caught that train!' 'Yes,' she replied, 'and if you had not hurried me so we wouldn't have so long to wait for the next one.'

Famine and its cause- George Bernard Shaw, tall and slender, was once told by G. K. Chesterton who was noted for his rotundity: 'To look at you, Shaw, a person would think there was famine in England.' To which Shaw sarcastically retorted: ' Yes, and to look at you, he'd think you were the cause of it.'

Some soldiers in ancient Greece were twitting another soldier because of his withered foot. The twitting stopped when he said, 'I am here to fight, not to run.'

As a simple, unpretentious admirer of fine art. Elbert Hubbard derived much pleasure from visiting the great art galleries. One day he was admiring a priceless painting in a New York gallery when a friend chidingly remarked, 'Elbert, why do you allow yourself to become so enthused over things you can never afford to own?' 'Harry,' replied the sage of East Aurora, 'I would rather be able to appreciate things I cannot have than to have things I am not able to appreciate.'

Story Time

  Lisungu Chieza from Zimbabwe was 26 when she was told in 1996 that she was HIV+. "This started my long journey of coping with being HIV+. My husband died in my arms at home eight months later." Not only did Lisungu have to cope with her own illness and losing her husband, but her husband's family also wrongly blamed her for his death. They came to her house, took away his things, and said, "If those children of yours get sick, don't even call us. We won't have anything to do with them or you." They would not even let her go to her husband's burial. "I gave up a college course I had planned to do. All I thought about was death. I neglected my children and myself." But her mother supported her. Lisungu began to find hope again and joined an HIV support group. Then she started to help others who were also HIV+, and took a college course about HIV-AIDS. She spoke at HIV meetings with the young people in her church. She believes that it is ver...
